Bureau County Farm Bureau – Free Water Testing for Nitrates @ Bureau County Farm Bureau
Aug 4 @ 8:00 am – 10:00 am

Free Water Testing for Nitrates

The Bureau County Farm Bureau, has teamed up with Nutrient Stewardship of Northern Illinois to host free water testing open house days for private landowners and operators. Each Friday, an open house from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. will be held at the Bureau County Farm Bureau, 535 Elm Place, in Princeton.

Tested water can be collected from field tiles, streams or ponds. The testing and results of water samples are for private land owner/operator use only. The water test is free, and confidential, no results will be saved. Results are simply a snapshot in time of nutrient levels and can vary greatly depending on the time of year, temperature, rainfall, and crop and in-field practices.

When collecting samples keep in mind that a measurement of flow (the volume of water leaving a site) would help determine the total nutrient loading into a body of water. Also, an additional measurement of acres being drained would help determine the pounds per acre leaving the field.

Sample Collection Instructions:

    • Sample containers should be clean and free of any residual chemicals or detergents.

    • Water samples need to be at least 8 ounces.

    • Samples should be taken as close to the testing time as possible (preferably within 48hrs).

    • Samples should be kept refrigerated if not being tested immediately.

For more information about the test and additional testing sites visit: http://www.illinoiscbmp.org/Water-Testing/ or contact Bureau County Farm Bureau at 815-875-6468.

“Voices from Mount Bloom” – historic Mount Bloom Cemetery @ Mount Bloom Cemetery
Aug 5 all-day

On the afternoon of August 5, former residents from Tiskilwa’s colorful past will share a few of their most interesting life experiences. Ticketed performances will begin at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00, as visitors gather ‘round the gazebo on the south side of historic Mount Bloom Cemetery, atop of the bluff just west of Tiskilwa.

Specially selected local actors in period costume will portray these six citizens of the past: Shannon Cotter as Catharine Keep Bloom, the young wife and mother who was the first burial at Mt. Bloom; Ed Waca as Bill Slygh, longtime blacksmith and storyteller; Joy Schertz as Romelia Lyon Stevens, matriarch of the B.N. Stevens family and their historic home; Phil Kauffman as O.W. Battey, who founded the Battey Lumber Company in the late 1800s; and Tom and Linda Ashby as Aaron Sturges, a Revolutionary veteran, and his daughter Lydia.

In a new event for Pow Wow Days, the Tiskilwa Historical Society is presenting “Voices from Mount Bloom” in order to raise money for its newly established Building Fund. Its first project will be the renovation and restoration of the American Legion Hall as a new location for selected portions of the society’s military and country school collections.

Tickets are now on sale daily at the Tiskilwa Public Library as well as Saturdays at Tiskilwa’s Museum on Main. For this fundraiser, the society is requesting donations of $10 for adult and $5 for teens. Children 12 and under will be admitted free in the company of a ticketed adult.

For those who need a ride, BPART buses will be provided, leaving from the museum. For those driving, parking will be available in the field below the cemetery steps or the pasture just west of the cemetery. Audience members are asked not to park on the north or south side of the cemetery grounds. In case of a downpour, the three presentations will be held upstairs in the community room of the Museum on Main.

“We want children to know they have the right to their own unique feelings, and a right to talk about these feelings” said Casford

Casford said children will listen to stories, design their own treasure chests, sing songs, and fill out a workbook to remember their loved ones.  All materials and lunch will be provided. Children are asked to bring a picture of their loved one or any small keepsake that reminds them of the relative or friend they have lost.

For more information about and to register for the workshop, call Illinois Valley Hospice at 815-224-1307.

Oct 27 @ 8:00 am – 10:00 am
