Free Water Testing for Nitrates
The Bureau County Farm Bureau, has teamed up with Nutrient Stewardship of Northern Illinois to host free water testing open house days for private landowners and operators. Each Friday, an open house from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. will be held at the Bureau County Farm Bureau, 535 Elm Place, in Princeton.
Tested water can be collected from field tiles, streams or ponds. The testing and results of water samples are for private land owner/operator use only. The water test is free, and confidential, no results will be saved. Results are simply a snapshot in time of nutrient levels and can vary greatly depending on the time of year, temperature, rainfall, and crop and in-field practices.
When collecting samples keep in mind that a measurement of flow (the volume of water leaving a site) would help determine the total nutrient loading into a body of water. Also, an additional measurement of acres being drained would help determine the pounds per acre leaving the field.
Sample Collection Instructions:
-
Sample containers should be clean and free of any residual chemicals or detergents.
-
Water samples need to be at least 8 ounces.
-
Samples should be taken as close to the testing time as possible (preferably within 48hrs).
-
Samples should be kept refrigerated if not being tested immediately.
For more information about the test and additional testing sites visit: http://www.illinoiscbmp.org/Water-Testing/ or contact Bureau County Farm Bureau at 815-875-6468.

It’s always a good idea to periodically check records to see if you might have money coming to you that perhaps you didn’t know about. The I-Cash Unclaimed Property team will once again help you find out for sure at Princeton Public Library Friday April 21 from 1-5 p.m. This free program will offer a hands-on opportunity to search for any items you might have coming to you.

Illinois Valley Community College chemistry instructor Matthew Johll will once again trust science over common sense as he has a cement block smashed off his chest while lying on a bed of nails at the annual Sci-Fest from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 21 in the gym.
Sponsored by the STEM/Chem club, officer Arinze Ochuba said, “This event introduces kids early on to science, technology, engineering and mathematics for exploration, understanding and fun.”
Guests can check out 40 stations with demos from chemistry, biology, physics and geology. Back by popular demand are imploding barrels, liquid nitrogen ice cream and Ruben’s Tube.
“We had about 600 guests last year,” Ochuba said. “My favorite parts were greeting the first guests to arrive and of course when we smashed the cinder block on Dr. Johll’s chest as he laid on a bed of nails!”
The event is free and open to the public. Contact Johll at (815) 224-0468 for information.

On Monday, May 8, almost 185 years to the day after the Battle of Stillman’s Run (near Rockford) during the Black Hawk War, Jim Chevalier of Elgin will present “Tiskilwa’s Linc to the Black Hawk War.”
Jim will explain this war’s consequences in the lives of both Abraham Lincoln and the famous Sauk chief, Black Hawk.
Using video clips plus his knowledge of history, Jim will tell of Black Hawk’s late 1831 war council when the famous warrior summoned the Potawatomi and other tribes to Indiantown [now Tiskilwa] to rally support for defense of their homelands against the onslaught of European settlers.
Jim has done extensive research on Black Hawk and his efforts to preserve the territory of the Sauk, Fox, and other Native American tribes. A retired history teacher, Jim hopes someday to write a novel of two young boys who grew up as friends but were compelled to fight on opposing sides of the Black Hawk War.
Following the program, the society will provide refreshments and host a social time in the galleries. The society is presenting another program of interest for folks of all ages – from long-time history buffs to young scholars and everyone in between.
