IVCC blood drive
Jan 18 @ 8:30 am – 2:30 pm

Illinois Valley Community College Red Cross Club and Student Nurses Association
along with Illini Valley Association of Realtors are sponsoring an American Red Cross (ARC)
Blood Drive from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 in the gymnasium in response to an
emergency call for blood and platelet donations due to a severe winter blood shortage.
Severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations this year, with
more than 150 blood drives forced to cancel causing over 5,500 blood and platelet donations to
go uncollected. This is in addition to seasonal illnesses, such as the flu, and hectic holiday
schedules collectively contributing to more than 28,000 fewer donations than what was needed in
November and December.
IVCC instructor and ARC volunteer Steve Swett said, “Donors can save up to 15 minutes
during the donation process by registering through RapidPass to select their appointment time
and fill out health history questions. They can also print or email their pass.”
Call Swett at (815) 224-0232 to make an appointment or visit
redcrossblood.org/RapidPass for information.

Hungry World Farms Presentation at the Princeton Public Library
Jan 18 @ 6:30 pm

On Thursday, Jan. 18 at 6:30 p.m. the Princeton Public Library will host a program led by the Steering Committee of Hungry World Farms of Tiskilwa. Newly established at the site of the former Plow Creek Farms, Hungry World Farms is in a vision-to-reality stage as a new non-profit organization whose mission is “seeking the well-being of all. Hungry World Farm inspires and educates people about healthy fields, food, and bodies while caring for the Earth.”

Andy Krabill, Brandie Lanier, Cal Zehr and Dennis Zehr will be on hand to talk about the formation of the organization and their future vision for the program. Bring your ideas of what might be added to their plans.

The concept of Hungry World Farm began through local conversations and a review of other farm-based ministries that teach about growing and consuming healthy food. Hungry World Farm will focus on educating people about food production, distribution, and consumption; addressing spiritual hunger in people’s’ lives; training local and international interns in farming techniques; and providing retreats for holistic growth and health.

Bureau County Farm Bureau – Free Water Testing for Nitrates @ Bureau County Farm Bureau
Jan 19 @ 8:00 am – 10:00 am

Free Water Testing for Nitrates

The Bureau County Farm Bureau, has teamed up with Nutrient Stewardship of Northern Illinois to host free water testing open house days for private landowners and operators. Each Friday, an open house from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. will be held at the Bureau County Farm Bureau, 535 Elm Place, in Princeton.

Tested water can be collected from field tiles, streams or ponds. The testing and results of water samples are for private land owner/operator use only. The water test is free, and confidential, no results will be saved. Results are simply a snapshot in time of nutrient levels and can vary greatly depending on the time of year, temperature, rainfall, and crop and in-field practices.

When collecting samples keep in mind that a measurement of flow (the volume of water leaving a site) would help determine the total nutrient loading into a body of water. Also, an additional measurement of acres being drained would help determine the pounds per acre leaving the field.

Sample Collection Instructions:

    • Sample containers should be clean and free of any residual chemicals or detergents.

    • Water samples need to be at least 8 ounces.

    • Samples should be taken as close to the testing time as possible (preferably within 48hrs).

    • Samples should be kept refrigerated if not being tested immediately.

For more information about the test and additional testing sites visit: http://www.illinoiscbmp.org/Water-Testing/ or contact Bureau County Farm Bureau at 815-875-6468.

IVCC offers dental clinics
Feb 2 @ 8:00 am – 12:00 pm

Illinois Valley Community College’s Dental Assisting Program is once again offering
dental clinics to IVCC students, staff and the community.
Screening days are Friday, Feb. 2 and 9 from 8 a.m. to noon and patients will receive a
comprehensive exam and cavity-detecting X-rays. Qualifying patients will be scheduled for a
cleaning appointment for a later date.
Free services include dental X-rays, exams, dental sealants and fluoride treatments. Basic
dental cleanings will be available for $30 and IVCC students and staff may qualify for a free
dental cleaning.
Dental Assisting Program coordinator Heather Seghi said, “Our students are excited to
start their clinics to hone their skills. Patients should have had a routine cleaning within the last
year to ensure they qualify for one in our clinic, but all interested parties may still be examined
to determine whether they qualify.
“We have outside resources for those who are unable to have the cleaning completed in
our clinic, and we are very happy to help in any way we can to ensure they receive the best care,”
she added.
Call Seghi at (815) 224-0359 or the Dental Lab at (815) 224-0227 to make a screening

May 4 @ 8:00 am – 10:00 am
