State Rep. LaShawn Ford Announces Run For Chicago Mayor

State Representative La Shawn Ford is running for mayor of Chicago. He officially announced his bid yesterday. The lawmaker is joining a list of candidates seeking to replace Rahm Emanuel, including Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, former Chicago Police Board president Lori Lightfoot, and ex-Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy. The Democrat has represented portions of Chicago’s west side since 2007.

VA Nursing Home Workers Protest Overtime

Employees at the Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy say they’re being unfairly overworked. Three-dozen union members picketed outside the nursing home Tuesday, saying they’re being forced to work too much overtime because officials won’t hire enough nurses or nursing assistants. In response, the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs said they’re being forced to ask staff to work overtime because an average of nine workers in every 24-hour period are calling in sick.

Judge Says Illinois Jails Are Still Mistreating The Mentally Ill

A federal judge says Illinois prisons are still mistreating the mentally ill. The judge said yesterday the Department of Corrections doesn’t have nearly enough staff to care for the state’s 40,000 inmates, of whom about 12-thousand are allegedly mentally ill. In 2016, the court ordered the state Corrections Department to make 25 specific changes to how they treat the mentally ill, including allowing people in solitary confinement to be out of their cells at least eight hours per week. The judge yesterday said the department has only made about seven of those changes.

Toy Grenade Prompts Campus-Wide Alert At UI

University of Illinois police are blaming a toy grenade for causing a bit of a panic on campus. Officials activated the campus-wide Illini Alert yesterday after someone spotted the grenade outside the Psychology Building and was unsure if it was real. Police said it didn’t take much time to get a closer look and discover it was just a prop.
