The driver in the first traffic accident of 2018 was lucky to avoid death or a major severe injury, according to Illinois State Police District 17, La Salle.
Robert Weinert, 30, of Worth, Illinois was eastbound on Interstate 80 on the north side of Ottawa at about 8:30 Monday morning when he fell asleep and lost control of the vehicle, which left the road and overturned.
Weinert was ejected from his Dodge Dart and landed in the ditch, about 60 feet from his vehicle.
According to a press release from the state police, Weinert was fortunate that a thick blanket of snow in the ditch prevented a fatal injury. He was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The press release goes on to remind motorists of the importance of wearing your seat belt and making sure you’re alert when driving.
Weinert was charged with improper lane usage and failure to wear a seat belt.
